Cowichan knitting is a form of knitting developed by the Cowichen people of the West Coast of British Columbia. The distinctively-patterned, heavy-knit Cowichan sweaters, popular among British Columbians and tourists, are produced using this method. Cowichan knitting is an acculterated art form, a combination of European textile teqhniques and Salish spinning and weaving methods.
Most knitwear includes only two or three colours. In sweaters, the colours form either geometric or representational designs. There are usually geometric motif bands above and below the representational figure, which are also repeated on the sleeves. Knitters will also create custom patterns, often with no traditional associations.
